“After you have exhausted what there is in business, politics, conviviality, love, and so on — finally satisfy, or permanently wear —what remains? Nature remains; to bring out from their torpid recesses, the affinities of a man or woman with open air, the trees, fields, the changes of seasons — the sun by day and the stars of heaven by night.” —Walt Whitman
As I grow exhausted by what often goes on in our world, I find that nature revives. Whitman had it right. Nature elicits affinity - the relationship existing between persons that are naturally or involuntarily drawn together by virtue of their shared humanity. It has become all too easy to lose sight of that. In 2018, we began hiking in the many state parks and nature preserves within a few hours drive of our home here in the Ohio Valley. These forays into nature have inspired my reflection and art practice.
