Meet Tom

Tom is an award-winning mixed media artist living and working in the Greater Cincinnati area. Using marks and forms he creates intuitive, layered abstracts rooted in memory and place reflecting the emotions we all experience. His style embraces a “discipline of accident,” using whatever happens on the canvas in the creative process. He often recycles dried paint, peeled and scraped from palettes to use as collage in the paintings.Tom holds a B.S. in English literature and a M.A. in psychology both of which inform his art making. His paintings are in private and corporate collections across the United States.

“I have been painting and creating art all of my life. Growing up I had an endless supply of paper, pencils and paints always at the ready on a small card table in the corner of our living room. In high school, I took over a section of the family garage as my studio.  My father was creative with hammer and nails and could fix anything and my mother was a talented seamstress and artist.  From them I learned to keep trying and learning. I live with my husband, Neil, in a small Victorian home along with our two dogs, Mavis, a Norwich Terrier and her sidekick, Blanche, a rescued West Highland White Terrier."

ABOUT THE WORK: The Continuity of Awareness

In my early career I taught high school students and I learned early on that, the real education, where students learned lasting lessons, was in the hallway, not the classroom.  Where joys and hurts, real or perceived, were experienced and then acted upon in the classroom. There was so much more that was going on there than I could be aware of in that present, classroom moment. One could only see the edges. I think that is very much what life is like, be it home, office, or in the public square. We experience internal, personal, or national conversations all of the time that spill into each of our present moments, shaping our interactions and social landscapes. Sometimes we only see the edges in the present.  I want to show that dynamic in my art. Each of us is always, simultaneously in the hallway and in the classroom.
